The latest instalment of the brilliant Dubstep Allstars mix series from Tempa will be released this august by one of the original heads behind the dark sound: Distance.

Usually my music posts on here are used for promoting lesser known talent with releases and music that I feel are under-appreciated or just a little bit special. Today, I suppose falls into the latter category but it's just an amazing piece of music by an all round amazing artist.

Richard D James, also known as Aphex Twin among other things, has been frequently hailed as one of the greatest electronic musicians, but sometimes I really do forget just how amazing some of his music is. Today's track shows the softer side of RDJ and proves how he is really a musical master.

Pinch - Swish

A track that's been doing the rounds on blogs and mixes a lot since it first appeared a little while back, Pinch's dancefloor monster Swish finally gets released next monday.

The vinyl 12" is in record shops this week, with the official release date being next monday. It's an example of aggressive, tearout dubstep done properly, and though I was surprised to see it out on DEEP MEDi MUSIK it's most certainly not unwelcome (especially the artwork: Tunnidge's drawing of Pinch is spot on in my opinion).

The flip side of the release is a 155bpm track called Tunnel Home. It falls into a cross between jungle and dubstep at a tempo caught in between. A fantastic exercise in something a little bit different, still in keeping with the dubstep vibe.

Get down to your local and cop the vinyl, or you can order it from Chemical records. MP3 downloads are presumably soon to follow if recent MEDi releases are anything to go by.

As I'm nearing up 100 followers, it'd be presumptuous of me to assume that the readers here for art and such would know about dubstep and, more importantly, the type of dubstep that's being posted here on the blog.

To give it a little context I've created a little introduction page to dubstep and the deeper side of the sound in comparison to the noisy sound that most people assume to be the entire range of music dubstep has to offer.

Truth - Puppet Master (Tunnidge remix)

One of the heaviest hitters in dubstep, Tunnidge, and his partner in crime Cyrus, release the second 12" on their Origin Audio label this friday; the combo of dancefloor smashers, Ghost Dance and Truth's Puppet Master (Tunnidge remix).

The man behind the DEEP MEDi label illustrations, Tunnidge is both an artist and musician (he also loves a good fry-up). Teaming up with Cyrus, Origin Audio was a label started with the intent of promoting the music that dubstep was originally associated with. The sub-heavy sound that made everyone fall in love with it in the first place. Operating in that little niche that offers a deeper sound without compromising on dancefloor articulation, Tunnidge creates atmospheric bangers with elements to move your mind and your feet.

Cyrus - Looking Back

One of the unsung heroes of dubstep, Cyrus has always lurked behind the scenes, from the early days as a dark garage DJ to his fantastic 2007 album, From The Shadows. Pushing the deeper, meditative side of the sound, Cyrus has fired out some of the best tunes the darker side of dubstep has to offer.

Following on from his amazing release on DEEP MEDi, Manhatten Blues, Cyrus is delivering us this deep cut, Looking Back, coupled with equally as deep a cut, Soul Seeker.

One notable thing about all of Cyrus' production is the amazing attention to detail on the percussion. I could reel off a list of tunes from his back catalogue, all with amazingly well produced and, most importantly, interesting drums.

Anyone a fan of bass music would do well to cop Looking Back / Soul Seeker out on Distance's Chestplate label, with vinyl shipping this friday from Chemical and digital MP3 downloads presumably soon to follow.

A Survivor Is Born

I don't really do gaming news over here at phthalo. as it's an area covered by people far more equipped than I, but today I'm making an exception as this is something that has me genuinely excited.

Titled Tomb Raider 'Turning Point', this is the debut trailer for what is apparently an origins-type game, where we'll learn how Lara Croft became the character that has wooed many a generation of video game geeks.

The trailer obvious goes some way to make it look beautiful and flashy, but I'm just as excited to see what they've got in store for us in terms of gameplay. Tomb Raider was one of my favourite series of games when I was younger, and I hope this reboot does it's memory proud.

La Maison en Petits Cubes

From the same director as The Diary Of Tortov Roddle comes this Oscar winning animation entitled La Maison en Petits Cubes, or, The House of Small Cubes. The animation is a nostalgic retrospective of an old man's life, shown as he descends through the flooded levels of his constantly growing house.

If you've got 12 minutes spare, then you can watch the whole short animation right there, on Youtube. It's beautifully stylish, and heartbreakingly touching. If you enjoyed the sad part at the beginning of the 2009 animated movie Up, then you will almost certainly enjoy this. It's quite clear why it won an Academy Award. It's a concise little story, that unfolds beautifully without the need for any dialogue. The art, which shares a lot in common with Tortov Roddle, is wonderfully characteristic and lends itself to the nostalgic story type very well.

If you're a fan of art, or touching stories in general, you shouldn't need any more convincing but I will do so anyway: it's an amazing work and if you have a caring bone in your body you'll almost certainly get something from this.

The Diary Of Tortov Roddle

Straying into the catagory of animation today, I bring you what I suppose can be technically described as anime. In reality, however, it's so far from people preconceived notions of 'anime' that the word becomes redundant. It's surreal, it's subtle, and most of all, it's beautiful.

Episode 5 in a series of 6 shorts, The Melancholy Rain is a favourite animation of mine. The whole series doesn't rely on dialogue to tell it's story. In fact, the text cards aren't even translated on this Youtube video, but I don't think it detracts from the story at all.

The premise of each episode is a brief glimpse into the travels of Tortov Roddle, the title character. In each episode Tortov shows us a whimsical little event that has occurred in the bizarre, picturesque land that he travels within. With episodes only running at 3 minutes a piece, there's not much room for a plot, as such, but that is one of the strengths of this mini-series. It's feels more like looking at a moving painting than a full-blown cartoon.

Even if you don't consider yourself a fan of cartoons or animations, I do recommend you watch this series. It's mature surrealism, displayed beautifully.

Regular readers will remember the post I did a little while back on V.I.V.E.K, showcasing many of the unreleased dubplates that have been appearing across the dubstep scene recently. Today finally sees the release of a few of those tunes in the form of the Eyes Down EP.

This release (like most DEEP MEDi releases) has been a long time coming for those of us who keep track of the underground bass music scene and have been craving for more V.I.V.E.K since last years Feel It EP and the recent Pulse/Roots 12". The obscene amount of amazing tunes that have been coming from the man recently has left us all itching for as much as we can get our hands on. It's something special when someone can produce fantastic tunes so consistently.

Don't watch the radio rip on this one.

The landscape topographies were derived from graph data... modeled in 3D and then oil paintings created from those 3D renders.

They remind me of the landscapes shown in the star gate sequence at the end of the classic sci-fi film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

District & Sleeper

The recent music and art features had been getting a little bit too colourful so I thought it about time I kicked you backed out into the cold with something a little bit special.

Sleeper & District, two names at the forefront of the deep and minimal dubstep style, have emerged over the last few months as some of the finest producers pushing the sound reminiscent of the early dubstep vibe.

Getting airplay from some of the biggest names in the scene (including Distance and Youngsta), the two have provided some of the highlights from recent Rinse FM sets. Inspired by the character and atmosphere of horror films, District describes his sound as "dark and bass heavy", and that's as good a way as any to represent the music they're both pushing.

The two have been keeping any potential release details close to their chest as no news about a home for the mass of dubs that have emerged recently has surfaced. As such the only way to hear them is by locking into Youngsta on Rinse FM or catching some of the various mixes the two have been putting out recently:

You can also download an MP3 of the above Sleeper tune for free over at Trusik. Submerged is one of my favourite Sleeper tunes so big up to the man for giving it away. Keaver & Brause

As promised, today I present to you frequent collaborators with yesterday's musical architect, Lone: Keaver & Brause.

Rooted in the wavey downtempo of Lone's early work, Keaver & Brause provide the other side of summer. Dropping the tropical for a collection of samples collected from sources ranging from jazz to folk, their debut album, The Middle Way, is a strong collection of psychedelically influenced hip-hop.

Often confused for a duo, Keaver & Brause is actually the work of just one man who apparently goes by the name of Tom. His collaborations with Lone have been released under the alias of Kona Triangle and their album, Sing A New Sapling Into Existence was a personal highlight of 2009.

Lone

Matt Cutler, who goes by the name of Lone, is an artist that has exploded over the last year or so. Moving from thick, dreamy hip-hop beats into four to the floor house tracks, Lone has retained his trademark style of woozy, tropical synths and glistening melodies and has become a bit of a champion for the nostalgia of early 90s dance music.

It was Lone's second album, 2008's Lemurian, that first made people stand up and take notice of his music. Caught somewhere between Boards Of Canada's trademark sound, and Flying Lotus' off-kilter drums, Lemurian stood out as something a bit more than the sum of it's parts. Hazy, shimmering, psychedelic, and downright summery, it set out Lone's wares in the best way possible: a consistent, flowing body of music.

After a couple of EPs, 2009's Ecstasy And Friends continued the vibe set out by his previous work. An album that can be seen as the summation of all his previous efforts, Ecstasy And Friends, cut out the short vignette-style tracks and went in with stand-out track after stand-out track. Mixing up tempos slightly, and highlighting the development of his production abilities, the album really drew a line under the hip-hop style that Lone was working with.

2010 saw the start of Lone's own record label, Magic Wire, and the development of his new sound. Single Pineapple Crush saw Lone shed the downtempo beats for the throwback rave sound that he's now primarily known for. Following the Once In A While single, an EP/LP, Emerald Fantasy Tracks, on his own label, and a recently released EP, Echolocations, for legendary label R&S, Lone shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

Black Moth Super Rainbow

Today's band rest comfortably in a musical area almost as out-there as their name. A gang of forest dwelling musicians, Black Moth Super Rainbow create psychedelic musical sketches with an array of analogue equipment which sounds like it might have seen better days. This equipment, however, lends them their unique sound which sits them somewhere between Boards of Canada and eccentric vocoder pop.

Start A People, their first album proper (after their debut which bridged the gap between previous project Satanstompingcaterpillars), is record drench in sunny nostalgia. Synths which sound like toys compete with noisy drum machines, all drowning out the heavily manipulated voice of group vocalist Tobacco. The silly names don't stop there though, with other members including, Father Hummingbird, and The Seven Fields of Aphelio.

The sketches shown in Start A People developed into a fully formed musical statement on 2007's Dandelion Gum.

The members solo work is also very good; in particular Tobacco's two albums, Fucked Up Friends and Manic Meat. Somewhat edgier, with an intelligent hip-hop feeling, Fucked Up Friends contains some fantastic guest appearances.

Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto

With the release of their new album coming next week, today's music comes from a pair who are masters in their respective musical fields; Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto.

A collaborative duo that has been developing for several years, minimalist piano joins forces with minimalist electronics to create a sound that is equal parts clinical as it is organic. Sakamoto's considered piano melts carefully and effortlessly into the masterful clicks and hiccups of Alva Noto's digital manipulation.

Supposedly their last album together, Summvs, has been very warmly received thus far:

Since 2002 the two musicians have fused their disciplines near-faultlessly... Each album has brought the duo slightly closer together, and 'summvs' (the title an amalgamation of the words summa and versus) sees their work reach critical mass.

There is something elegiac and deeply final about 'summvs', it feels like an ink stamp, an underline, a statement from the duo saying 'this is it, and this is the best it can be', and it truly is. Memorable, atmospheric and beautiful - even if you've missed all four of their previous albums, 'summvs' is the one to buy.

Boards Of Canada

As always in the music feature, I strive to bring you something a little bit strange, and a little bit special. Today's duo have no shortage of either.

Boards Of Canada are Scottish brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin. As a band they've given themselves a mystical image to the outside world, with cryptic websites, stories of their legendary Hexagon Sun studios, and, of course, their wonderfully complex music.

Their music is an evocative mix woozy synthesisers, sun-kissed melodies, dark atmospheres, and downtempo beats. All these elements are held together by a incredible air of nostalgia throughout. Whilst creating the feeling of watching an old children's television program, they simultaneously weave a melancholy, dark ambience through the proceeding tracks, conjuring up the frightening reality childhood often is.

As well as these fantastically sinister undertones (which came to a head on their second album, Geogaddi), they're also capable of creating some very, very beautiful music such as the centre piece of their newest album, 2005's The Campfire Headphase, Dayvan Cowboy.

It's pretty safe to say that Boards Of Canada are probably my favourite band. Their debut album, Music Has The Right To Children, is easily in my top 3 albums, and has been since I first discovered it. Never have I come across a body of work with such layers of detail. Their music rewards re-listen after re-listen as it reveals the intricate details that have been put into the songs.

Leif Podhajsky is the artist behind the cover of Innerspeaker, the debut album from yesterday's music feature, Tame Impala. Now you learn that good things come in twos. Fantastic art to accompany the fantastic music.

Musicians often rely on memorable cover art to represent their music; take Dark Side Of Moon, for example. Even people who have never listened to the album will almost certainly recognise the iconic artwork. Though it's an area that's become a bit lost, in a sea of generic unmemorable covers, it's good to know bands like Tame Impala are still using original, representative artwork for their music.

As well as his work for Tame Impala there is a lot of fantastic art commissioned for others on his website.

Tame Impala

Today's band, Tame Impala, are responsible for one of my favourite albums of last year. Their sound, heavily influenced by classic psychedelic rock, has been lovingly described (by my dad) as sounding as if the Beatles had discovered distortion and made music in 2010.

Tame Impala are a group of young men from Australia who describe themselves on their website better than I ever could:

Tame Impala is the movement in Orion's nebula and the slime from a snail journeying across a footpath. To humans however, Tame Impala is more of a 'music ensemble'...

Tame Impala make psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock music. It's intended for moving one's body to, and it's intended for keeping still and observing other forms of movement. It's bombastic but it's swirling, think of the shoulder bones of a giant striding feline creature through some kind of tunnel. If Tame Impala's music reminds you of what you'd want to put on when you next visit your mind's engine room then they're happy. If not, whatever, it's just music. Put it on when the sun next shines. Basically it's all about the feeling.

Anything I write after that summary will pale in comparison, so perhaps just enjoy some psychedelic hypno-grooves from their debut album, Innerspeaker.

Bop

With a new album, The Amazing Adventures Of One Curious Pixel, on the horizon for a release later this month, I think it's about time I introduced you to a favourite of mine: Bop.

Russian producer, Bop, has been making music on the outskirts of drum & bass for a few years now, but his music couldn't be further from people's idea of the genre. Substituting the growling basslines and dangerous drums for smooth synthesisers and clicky beats, Bop has practically rewritten the rulebook for left-field drum & bass and figure-headed an entire subgenre of so-called microfunk. Drawing influences from ambient to deep-house the style is characterised by it's minimal percussion and atmospheric drones.

After being spotted by Hospital records label head, London Elektricity, Bop released his first album on their Med School music label for new and unusual talent. The debut album, Clear Your Mind, proved to be summation of all of Bop's work, showcasing the real talent the young producer had. It also appeared to be a brilliantly designed album, as I somehow unconsciously have almost copied the colour scheme from the album cover with this blog! Following an EP of remixes and a few releases with artist Diagram under the name Abstract Elements, Bop returns this summer with his second album, The Amazing Adventures Of One Curious Pixel. Following on from the experimentation shown in his previous work, the album looks to go even further dabbling in different tempos, style, and genres.

Also worth keeping an eye out for is Bop's early collaborator, Despot. With some releases of his own on the horizon he's certainly a name to watch. Though, actually, most of Bop's collaborators are worth keeping an eye on.

Benn Jordan / The Flashbulb

As far as electronic musicians go there are very few who combine an immense musical talent with expert technical ability. Benn Jordan, primarily known in the music world under his alias, The Flashbulb, is one of these gifted producers able to seemlessly produce tracks that range between everything from jazz to ambient, to breakcore.

After over 10 years of releasing albums and working in television and film, Benn Jordan, got a lot of exposure due to his unique stance on file sharing. After discovering that his music had been put up for sale on iTunes and he had been receiving no money from it, Benn became outraged and decided to adopt a new business model for releasing his music. Uploading all his music onto BitTorrent trackers and offering a link for fans to donate; he then started releasing albums on his own Alphabasic label and providing beautifully designed, limited edition physical copies of the albums to satisfy hardcore fans and to compliment his donation tactics and personally monitored MP3 store.

It'd be silly to get too bogged down in this story though and forget some of the fantastic music the man has made under his various monikers. Here's just a small selection of the various genres he's worked in.

Well I was going to do a post about Tyler, the Creator, Earl, and the rest of the OFWGKTA crew, but since every other music related blog in the universe is currently hyping the blogsphere for the UK release of Goblin today (US next week), I thought I'd leave it to those guys to hype Odd Future and I'll hook you up with some of that British stuff.

Jehst is one of the veterans of UK hip-hop and in an often overlooked genre full of generic, rinsed styles, Jehst, almost a decade after his debut album, still comes sounding fresh and unique in the sea of boring hip-hop. The debut album in question, The Return of the Drifter, is full to the brim with cerebral rhymes, heavy beats, and creative sampling, making it stand out from the crowd and showing the potential that UK hip-hop had, and still has.

Jehst's newest album, Dragon of an Ordinary Family, is due to be released this June and, after being a good few years coming, is one of the most hotly anticipated album in a while. The first track appearing from the album, Starting Over, recently became a bit of viral hit when someone supposedly shot a video of Jehst delivering their mail.

It turned out to be a brilliantly orchestrated piece of advertisement when the full video was released, titled "jehst is DEFINATELY my postman", showcasing the track from his forthcoming album.

The Tallest Man On Earth

As I've been doing the folk thing for the last couple of music features, I hope you don't mind one more. Kristian Matsson, The Tallest Man On Earth, is a Swedish singer and multi-instrumentalist that has come about in recent years as one of the most exciting stripped back folk artists to come to prominence.

Armed with mostly just a guitar and his voice (which has been continually compared to Bob Dylan throughout his career), Kristian creates beautifully constructed folk songs. Varying between powerful strumming and intricate picking, his guitar work provides an impressive backdrop for his equally impressive vocal talents.

Some of my favourite songs are his quieter, more melancholy pieces such as this fantastic live version of Thrown Right At Me below.

His two EPs and two albums (Shallow Grave, and The Wild Hunt), are all available to purchase on record label Dead Oceans' webshop; on MP3 download, CD and vinyl. Make sure you catch him whilst he's on tour too. I saw him perform last year at a festival and he was fantastic.

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

Carrying on with the folk vibe, a band who could be considered Bibio's musical cousins from across the pond, Fleet Foxes release their long-awaited second album today.

Developing their own unique sound, Fleet Foxes have become one of the only so-called 'indie folk' bands to receive both critical acclaim and substantial commercial success. The lush vocal harmonies which permeated through their debut album and follow up EP return with an added plethora of wonderful instrumentation on their sophomore album effort, Helplessness Blues, which was released today.

The band recently appeared on BBC Radio 1, courtesy of Zane Lowe, for a special extended session, playing a number of tracks from the new album along with a few favourites from there small back catalogue. You can find a snippet of the session below featuring three tracks from the new album that's available to buy now via Sub Pop records, on MP3 download, CD, or vinyl.

Bibio - Mr. & Mrs. Compost

A friend of mine recently posted about Bibio's new album, Mind Bokeh, and today I'm here to present to you one of my favourite Bibio tracks just in time for a beautiful summers day.

Vignetting The Compost was released, by Bibio, in 2009 on Mush records before his move to legendary electronic label Warp. Keeping the 'laptop folk' vibe of his first two albums, Vignetting The Compost combines wonderfully aged folk guitars with vocals swamped in effects replicating the sound of degraded tape recordings. In my opinion it is his finest piece of work. A focused body of music summing up his style as an electronically treated folk musician before he branched out into other genres on his Warp debut.

Mr. & Mrs. Compost is the second track on the album. After the lush, field recording filled opener, it removes the excess sounds and goes straight in with the folk guitar and vocals. A fantastic sample for the vibe to expect off the album, the song and accompanying video provide a glimpse into Bibio's music before he focused on producing more catchy beat-orientated records. I'd recommend the album to anyone who has enjoyed Bibio's latest works, anyone who enjoys folk music and the British countryside, or anyone looking to see what all the fuss is about.

Bonobo Live Review

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the brilliant Simon Green, aka Bonobo, and his 7-piece live band play to a packed out venue in Cardiff.

The evening started off well with the opening DJ, local boy Maxx Roach, dropping some lively dubstep as the venue filled up. The first highlight of the evening came when Mala's track Miracles got played. It was the first time I've heard it being played out and it cemented it as a favourite of mine. The next act on before Bonobo, was a young man called Crackazat. I'd never heard of him before but his funky, laid back style of glitchy hip-hop got the crowd moving.

After watching the band set up their instruments, Bonobo finally came on and immediately got a huge reaction from the audience. Despite them being a quite low-key, down-tempo band on record, the translation to a live show was amazing. The music had everyone in the audience dancing and shouting for more. After several instrumental tracks at the start, Simon introduced Submotion Orchestra vocalist Ruby Wood as she easily sang her way through several of the vocal tracks from Days To Come and Black Sands. Throughout the set there were tracks with breaks dedicated to showing off the undeniable talent of the band. In particular I thought the drummer was marvellous and really held together the energy of the live setting.

The evening rounded up with a fantastic encore of the title track off Black Sands and vocal number Between The Lines. The band hung around on the stage afterwards and were happy to chat to crowd as they were leaving. A nice ending to an evening of wonderful music.

I thought today I'd do a little feature on DEEP MEDi signing V.I.V.E.K. With two 12"s and an EP out on MEDi he's slowly been taking over the scene with deep dark movements reminiscent of the early dubstep sound. Currently smashing out massive tunes left, right, and centre I've rounded up a few of my favourite unreleased bits.

The Big Bang

Mixing out of Skream's Phatty Drummer here, this tune has been getting rinsed by MEDi boss Mala.

Out Of Reach

Hatcha, Youngsta, and of course V.I.V.E.K himself have all been playing this one out recently. A dark bassline combines with that deadly synth to create an absolute monster.

Sirens

Confirmed for a release on DEEP MEDi this year, a wicked exercise in percussion and bassweight.

Spread Love

V.I.V.E.K cuts it differently on this one with atmospheric vibes and rolling bongos gliding over the weighty bassline.

I struggled to narrow it down to these four. The man has been prolific lately, churning out tune after tune with no sign of stopping. With another double 12" EP, titled Eyes Down, forthcoming on DEEP MEDi, hopefully we'll have many of the unreleased beats in our record bags soon.

Since a few of you guys liked the spherical treehouse from yesterday's feature, I did a little bit of internet sleuthing and found some info on the so-called: Free Spirit Spheres.

Built on vision and engineering these handcrafted spheres are suspended like pendants from a web of rope. They occupy a truly unique place in the world while providing a habitat for the un-tamed spirit that exists in us all.

Once one breaks contact with the ground, energy shifts. The magical environment of the forest canopy conjures up thoughts of elves and fairies. One can feel the presence of the forest. That presence seems to dwell in the canopy where it can watch the meanderings below.

Sound a bit 'hippy-ish'? I agree; but they do look wonderful.

Treehouses

I know several of my readers are fort enthusiasts (or on the flipside, hold absolute disdain for their use in recent time). But you shouldn't let that stop you from making forts for your own noble uses (read: scoring with a female).
Anyway, back on point, if forts aren't your thing then maybe treehouses would be a bit more up your alley? I know after seeing these very impressive structures I nostalgia'd over the rudimentary treehouses me, my brother, and our friends made back when we were younger.

And last, but certainly not least, is the (almost) invisible treehouse, covered in mirrors.

The first tune, Myth, has been getting a lot of play from Youngsta on his recent Rinse FM shows, often as the opening track. The eastern strings shown several times in the Classic Tunes feature return on this lovely track.

A fresh plate of dubstep for your listening pleasure today. Dutch producer TMSV has been dropping weighty tunes recently, continuing the 'revival' of sorts that started with Kryptic Minds and has resulted in a new wave of producers making beats that are deep, dark and, most importantly, bass-heavy.

His next release is forthcoming this month on Box Clever; Black Box's offspring label for fresh talent.

The first tune (below), All It Takes, goes in tropical and summery with it's bongos and lush strings.

Anyone with even a passing interest in dubstep or it's satellite genres will almost certainly have come across the Swamp81 sound recently. This house mutation has taken over producers, DJs, clubs, radio shows, labels and this blogger, like almost everyone else, has not been immune to it.

Boddika, one half of Instra:mental (and one of the producers at the front of this sound), released his long awaited EP on Swamp81 this week. As with all Swamp releases it's vinyl only, on heavy plates with wicked artwork.

Vex'd were one of the originators behind the aggressive dubstep sound and their debut album, Degenerate, still rocks harder and darker than most of it's imitators.

Last year they released their second album, Cloud Seed, a compilation of unreleased tunes and remixes. Now the two members of Vex'd create music on their own under the alias' of Jamie Vex'd / Kuedo and Roly Vex'd / Armour.

50th Anniversary of First Human Space Flight

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's pioneering flight into space. On April 12, 1961, Gagarin completed a 108 minute orbital flight, making him the first man in space.
He became a national hero in the Soviet Union, and was not allowed to make any further space flights. He died at age 34, due to an accident in a MiG-15 fighter plane.

Check Google and Youtube's tributes to the day after the jump.

Google decided to honour this, as they do with many special days, by creating a special logo for their homepage (shown above). The rocket was animated, launching before moving off the edge of the image.

Youtube also altered there logo with a new space theme. Clicking on the image took you to the First Orbit project's Youtube page.

A real time recreation of Yuri Gagarin's pioneering first orbit, shot entirely in space from on board the International Space Station. The film combines this new footage with Gagarin's original mission audio and a new musical score by composer Philip Sheppard.

As promised, today's tune is by Bristol's own Joker. I remember hearing this tune when I started getting really into the different sounds of dubstep and waiting months for the release.

Joker's long awaited debut album should arrive with us later this year after much extended waiting. All I can be sure of is, given the quality of his recent dubplates, that it will be an album to buy on sight.

Brazil builds world's tallest Lego tower

Nearly 6,000 Lego lovers in Sao Paulo, mostly children, helped put together the independent blocks of Lego bricks which were later stacked using a crane.
The tower was composed of 500,000 Lego pieces and reached 102 feet and 3 inches, breaking the previous record set in Chile last year.
It took four days to build and was held in place by wire supports to prevent it from toppling over in the wind.

Today's tune is a party tune through and through. Some people (myself included) think that Rusko's gone a bit off recently with some of his productions. I wasn't impressed by his album, though I'm always willing to give his new tunes a listen. This however, I think, is when he reached the pinnacle of his sound. That lovely combination of somehow laid back and also energetic, and just a downright fun tune.

I've never seen Iron Man but I did see Iron Man 2 when it was released in the cinema. Although it wasn't amazing, it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting it to be. And the art shown here was definitely a one of the best design aspects of the film.

Well after the Loefah remix of Skream featured last week, I gave Loefah his own spotlight. Now it's time to give Skream the same. A lot of his tunes these days have moved away from the classic sound but there is still pretty much unanimous agreement that Skream is an utter don.

I was going to feature Midnight Request Line, Skream's classic, until I remembered Blue Eyez. I love the way the song slowly evolves throughout the four and a half minutes. That said, I could've picked almost any track from the Skream! album. If you were looking to purchase one dubstep album to introduce you to the sound, you could certainly do a lot worse. It's a classic.

If you've got a subwoofer, I advise you crank it up and let the bass rattle your chest. Unfortunately DMZ releases are very limited and the only way to get hold of this, and most other, DMZ 12"s is to buy a second hand copy. Discogs often has copies available but expect to pay silly money for it.

For those who don't know, I thought it was about time I introduce you to the one and only Carl Sagan.

Astronomer, astrophysicist, science populariser, science communicator, and avid marijuana smoker.

His 1980 television show, Cosmos, did a lot to introduce science into the viewing public's homes and his ability to convey scientific ideas in a simple, and somewhat wondrous, way made him a figurehead for science and logic.

His was the role that has been adopted by Brian Cox with his recent Wonders television series. Carl Sagan's famous Pale Blue Dot speech has been referenced several times in the Wonders of the Universe series that just finished airing on the BBC.

Adventure Time

Recently I've become quite obsessed with this cartoon, Adventure Time. It chronicles the surreal adventures of Jake the magic dog and Finn the human. It can only really be explained by watching a clip.

The somewhat silly humour reminds me a lot of the cartoons I used to watch when I was younger. And the bizarre situations they get into, well, they're just amazing.

I found this episode whilst looking for a suitable clip. It's algerbraic dude.

I really enjoyed the last episode of Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe. Anyone else who did, might also enjoy these out takes. The dogs and the bit by the waterfall I found particularly funny.

Waking up in a tent in the Brecon beacons with boots filled with confetti is a strange and wonderful experience.
